Indie games have a wonderful knack for taking mundane, everyday perspectives and turning them into epic adventures. Following in the charming footsteps of titles like Stray and Little Kitty, Big City, Windup Games is preparing to offer players a uniquely diminutive vantage point with their upcoming title, Hela: of Mice and Magic. Recently, a playable demo was released to the public, offering a tantalizing taste of this cozy, physics-based cooperative adventure. Blending whimsical Scandinavian folklore with delightful rodent protagonist mechanics, the demo has already captured my heart fully.

A Tale of Mice and Magic
Set in a vibrant world inspired by Scandinavian folklore, Hela puts players in control of a little mouse on a grand mission. Their human grandmother, a kind-hearted witch, has fallen ill, and it’s up to her tiny companions to brew the ultimate healing potion.
From the moment the demo boots up, the tone is established as warm, whimsical, and utterly enchanting. The narrative is light on heavy exposition, letting the environmental storytelling and charming animations do the heavy lifting. Even in this early slice of the game, the atmosphere evokes classic fairy tales, making you feel as though you’ve stepped directly into the pages of a children’s storybook.

Pint-Sized Mechanics and Physics-Based Puzzles
Gameplay in Hela is an engaging mix of exploration, traversal, and light puzzle-solving. Because you are playing as a mouse, the world feels oversized. Where even the smallest stream can be a drowning hazard.
The demo introduces players to the core movement mechanics, which emphasize agility and verticality. You can scurry up walls, squeeze through narrow cracks, and glide using makeshift parachutes, a feature that provides some genuinely great moments as you leap from trees. There is even a grapple hook so you can swing between the treetops.
Furthermore, the physics engine plays a central role. To solve puzzles and gather ingredients for potions, you often need to manipulate objects in different ways. While designed with cooperative play in mind (supporting up to four players online or locally), the solo experience in the demo proved surprisingly balanced and satisfying, offering a gentle yet engaging challenge.

A Beautiful Environment and a Few Hiccups
The game has a distinct art style, where it is easy to compare its cozy aesthetic to titles like It Takes Two or Pikmin, albeit at a much more relaxed, stress-free pace. And the environments are gorgeous with really good looking cutscenes. The fluidity of the mouse animations are also great and adds to a nice exploration experience.
Of course, being an early version, there are minor bugs regarding camera angles in tight indoor spaces and occasional physics hiccups. And I do wonder if the exploration aspect will continue to be fun through a full game.

A Squeak of Joy
The Hela: of Mice and Magic demo succeeds in doing exactly what a demo should: it leaves you wanting more. With its gorgeous art direction, endearing premise, and clever physics-based gameplay, Windup Games has crafted something special. Whether you are looking for a relaxing solo adventure or a delightful couch co-op experience to share with a partner or friend, Hela is shaping up to be a magical journey well worth keeping on your radar.
