Lollipop Chainsaw RePop is a remastered and re-released version of the 2012 cult classic that combines horror, action, and humor in a unique and unforgettable way. Developed by Dragami Game, it is a game that I never heard anyone really ask for a remaster on and now that it is here, do we really need it?
Headless boyfriend might be a couple goals?
Lollipop Chainsaw follows the story of Juliet Starling, a high school cheerleader who is turned into a zombie hunter after her boyfriend, Nick, is killed by the undead. Armed with her trusty chainsaw lollipop, Juliet battles her way through hordes of zombies, demons, and creatures from beyond the grave. The game’s cast of quirky characters, including the now headless boyfriend strapped to Juliet’s ass and the classic japanese pervy teacher Morikawa, adds depth and humor to the story.
Still fun killing zombies in style
Lollipop Chainsaw RePop retains the core gameplay of the original while introducing several enhancements. The combat is fast-paced and satisfying, with Juliet slicing and dicing zombies in a variety of gory and stylish ways. While the gameplay does feel a little stiff and old, they should have focused more on making it feeling fluid and modern, it is still way too fun to spin the chainsaw around, chopping heads with an explosion of colors. The game introduces abilities, allowing players to customize Juliet’s playstyle and unlock new moves. But the currency used for them is also used for new costumes (I tried my best getting one that looks kind of normal) and other upgrades. While I don´t like having multiple currencies in a game, skills and cosmetics could have been different.
A visual rollercoaster
The remastered visuals are a significant improvement over the original game, with enhanced lighting, textures, and character models. The game’s colorful and over-the-top art style remains intact, creating an unforgettable experience. Parts of the game, such as the reflection in the floor and water are almost on par with modern games, while characters and environments just really are enhanced. It doesn’t need to be beautiful by today’s standard, but I would have liked it to be more visually stunning. The soundtrack is excellent, featuring catchy rock and metal tracks that perfectly complement the game’s action, humor and gore.
To remaster or not remaster?
It is not a remaster I ever thought about and I haven’t heard anyone asking for it, but now that it is here, I´m having a hard time letting go of it. Does it look amazing? No. Is it kind of janky? Yes. Does it fit within our modern political climate? Not really. But there is a simplicity with tha game which feels good today. The game still has a huge amount of charm and self distancing itself from everything which feels fresh today. While I did not ask for the remaster, I am very happy that it exists.
Might be a game for you
Lollipop Chainsaw RePop turns out to be a welcome reboot of a cult classic that successfully revitalizes the game’s unique blend of horror, action, and humor. With updated visuals, gameplay enhancements, and exciting new features, this remastered version offers a fresh and exciting experience for fans of the original and newcomers alike. Whether you’re a seasoned zombie hunter or a first-time slasher enthusiast, Lollipop Chainsaw RePop might be a remaster that fits you.
