Neva: One of this year’s most beautiful experiences

When GRIS was released it took most of us by storm with one of the most beautiful presentations we had seen and a story that touched us more than we managed to explain. Now, Nomada Studio is back with their spiritual follow-up; Neva. And before we go all in on the review, this is one of the most beautiful games I have played this year.

Looks amazing
One of the first things that strikes me about Neva is its breathtaking visual design. With hand-drawn backgrounds and beautifully animated characters, the game achieves a dreamlike quality that draws players into its world. The use of color is particularly noteworthy; soft pastels contrast with more vivid shades to convey emotion and depth. Each environment is meticulously crafted, creating an immersive experience like stepping into a living painting. If GRIS was an artsy and beautiful game, Neva goes way beyond that creating something truly unique and wondrous.

More gameplay mechanics make an even better game
Neva blends platforming and puzzle-solving elements with a strong narrative component. Players take on the role of a young woman and her animal companion, navigating through a series of meticulously crafted levels. The controls are intuitive, moving feel fluid and responsive. Puzzles range from simple traversal challenges to more complex interactions requiring both characters to work in tandem. This dynamic promotes cooperation and enhances the emotional bond between the protagonist and her companion.

The game introduces new mechanics gradually, allowing players to familiarize themselves with each element before adding layers of complexity. This pacing keeps the gameplay engaging without overwhelming players, making it suitable for both casual gamers and those looking for more strategic depth. Neva also adds enemies and a fighting mechanic which elevates the game even further. The enemies come in different forms and attack patterns and fighting feels amazing in so many ways.

A story as beautiful as the game’s visuals.
At the heart of Neva is a rich, emotional narrative that tackles themes of friendship, loss, and the cycle of life. The story unfolds without a heavy reliance on dialogue, instead using visual storytelling and environmental cues to convey its messages. This approach allows players to connect with the characters on a profound level, feeling the weight of their journey.

The narrative explores the bond between the protagonist and her companion, showcasing moments of joy and sorrow that resonate deeply with players. The game’s themes of growth and change reflect real-life experiences, making it a poignant exploration of existence. When the credits hit, I ended up just staring at the screen, listening to the music, trying to break down the ride I had been on.

A Soundtrack that stays with you
The soundtrack accompanying Neva is nothing short of magical, featuring a hauntingly beautiful score that complements the game’s emotional landscape. The sound design enhances the atmospheric quality, with subtle audio cues that guide players and immerse them in the game world. I can still hear the protagonist yell Neva at times when I´m not playing. Each musical piece feels carefully chosen, marrying seamlessly with the visuals to create a profound experience.

Conclusion:
Neva is a remarkable addition to the realm of indie games, showcasing the potential of the medium to tell compelling and emotional stories. With its stunning art style, engaging gameplay, and profound narrative, it stands as a testament to how video games can achieve more than just entertainment; they can evoke deep emotional responses and provoke thoughtful reflection.

While some may find the pacing slow, those who appreciate a more meditative gaming experience will find Neva to be a gem. It’s a game that encourages players to pause and reflect, making it an enriching experience. Neva is a beautifully crafted journey that resonates on multiple levels. It’s a must-play for anyone who values storytelling and artistry in gaming. With its absorbing visuals, engaging gameplay, and heartfelt themes,
