Wildermyth, developed by Worldwalker Games, is a tactical RPG that stands out for its innovative approach to storytelling and gameplay. Finally released on consoles with some great additions, Wildermyth offers players a rich experience that combines classic tabletop RPG elements with the conveniences and aesthetics of video games.
Best digital tabletop out there
At its core, Wildermyth emphasizes character-driven narratives. Players craft their heroes and guide them through procedurally generated adventures across various regions filled with mythical creatures and challenging quests. The character creation process is particularly engaging; not only do you customize a hero’s appearance and class, but the game also generates a backstory and personality traits that influence interactions and decision-making throughout the campaign.
The tactical combat in Wildermyth is turn-based and reminiscent of games like XCOM. The battles are engaging and require strategic thinking, as players must position their heroes wisely, utilize terrain, and make the most of their unique abilities. The game also encourages creativity, allowing players to adapt to different challenges by combining skills and equipment in innovative ways.
Dynamic and interesting stories
What sets Wildermyth apart from other RPGs is its dynamic storytelling. Events and encounters are influenced by players’ choices, leading to a branching narrative that feels personal and immersive. The game simulates the experience of a tabletop RPG, where the decisions made during campaigns have lasting consequences. Characters can grow old, form relationships, and even pass the torch to a new generation of heroes, creating an emotional investment that many games struggle to achieve.
The art style is another highlight; it features a charming, hand-drawn aesthetic packed with vibrant colors and whimsical designs that enhance the fairy-tale atmosphere. The visual presentation complements the game’s narrative depth beautifully, making each battle feel epic and each storyline feels unique.
New console additions
With the console edition, there are two new additions aside from the quality of life changes. The first is the monster compendium where you can read and learn more about monsters, factions, and lore from the game world. This adds to the great tabletop feeling the game already has.
The second and even better addition is that you can play the game in local coop for up to four people, where you take control of multiple characters and take on the story together, somewhat similar to what we saw with Baldurs Gate 3 last year. And having played the game both alone and with friends, like any tabletop game, it is even better with friends. I have on multiple occasions brought my switch with me when visiting friends and every time it has been a huge hit. This feels like how the game is ultimately supposed to be played.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Wildermyth is a breath of fresh air in the RPG genre. Its blend of tactical gameplay, engaging narrative, and a unique approach to character development make it a must-try for fans of role-playing games. The game successfully simulates the joy of tabletop adventures while delivering a polished and immersive experience. Whether you’re a veteran of the genre or new to RPGs, Wildermyth offers something special that will leave you eager for your next adventure. Highly recommended!
